Drum Lesson Curriculum Fully Online
After decades of doing things the old-fashioned way, making use of books, printed sheet music, and even hand-written sheet music, it was time to allow technology to provide some “quality of life” improvements.
We’ve traded in the music stands for a projector and a laptop. Sheet music is displayed on a wall-mounted screen.
The Syllabus has been built using Workflowy, which is essentially a collapsible outline. It serves as an index of all lesson materials. The organizational structure is tree-like, with branches that can be folded and unfolded with a click. There are lists of songs to learn, beats, and other patterns arranged categorically, each with corresponding sheet music, and “bonus” resources such as breakdowns, practice guides and video demonstrations.
In order to make edits and notes during the lessons “on-the-fly”, Jeff uses Miro’s Web Whiteboard. With this application, one can add text, shapes, freehand drawings, and copy and paste images.
After each lesson, students receive a typed summary of what was covered, with a link to the Workflowy branch corresponding to each topic.
These changes have been appreciated by students and teacher alike. Students are easily able to keep track of their goals and assignments, and access any materials they need to practice. With the entire curriculum online, the teacher can be well-prepared for any drum-related topic that may arise during the lesson.
